On Monday the 29th of October, I’ll be lecturing at Skolforum, Älvsjömässan, Stockholm, on creative writing and its connections to reading. I’ve been giving workshops on this and related topics around the country; this lecture will contain new ideas developed in my various classrooms, and included in my upcoming book Creative Writing – A Classroom Guide, to be published by Natur och Kultur (new release date: February 28th, 2019).

Throughout my years of teaching, writing, lecturing, and researching, I’ve developed what I believe is a breakthrough approach to teaching writing of all types, and creative writing in particular. It explains the underlying rules of various formats based on relationships of those engaged in these virtual conversations.

A special thanks to the teachers at Hedbergska gymnasium, Sundsvall, Rudbecksgymnasium, Örebro, Vägga gymnasieskola in Karlshamn, and Blackebergs gymnasium, Stockholm, Sweden, for their recent responses to key sections of my ideas and methods.

The weekend of the 9th-10th of May I’ll be teaching a two-day short story workshop at Skrivarakademin in Stockholm.  There are a few spots left for anyone interested –– follow the link to sign up.

During the past few years I’ve been writing and publishing a lot of short stories with Natur och Kultur, Myrios novellförlag, X Publishing and even Haninge Kommun’s department of Kultur och fritid (they commissioned a story from me a for a catalogue of the county’s public artworks).  Short stories are, in my experience, often written for particular purposes or occasions –– they are seldom the sole text in a publication, and therefore they have to relate to the goals of the publication as a whole.  I’ll be working with workshop participants on writing stories for various purposes and markets, including selling stories and working with editors who don’t quite know what they want.  We’ll work on various sellable structures and try our hands at writing effective intros and conclusions.

For anyone interested in creative writing in English in Stockholm 2012, I’ll be offering a free trial evening class Tuesday January 17th, 7:15-8:15pm at Folkuniversitetet, Kungstensgatan 45 (subway stop: Rådmansgatan).

We’ll start out with a brief writing exercise, briefly discuss our work, and finally I’ll introduce the group to a bit of narrative theory from a structural perspective.  I’ll have a list of topics to be covered in the course itself (which will meet Mondays 6-9:15pm, starting February 6th).

Folkuniversitetets Skrivarakademin in Stockholm has just released its sign-up info for next spring’s Creative Writing and Narrative Theory course.  I’ll be teaching Monday evenings, 6-9:15 p.m., at Kungstensgatan 45.

What will writers be getting for their money?  My goal is teach people everything I’ve spent the past twenty-odd years painfully learning in classes and by hand, through trial and error and the hundreds of rejections I accumulated before becoming a working author.  Skills and theory, as well as updates on what’s going on in the publishing industry and the world of literature, so people won’t have to figure it all out by themselves.  Also: a sense of community, and a chance to take yourself seriously as a writer.  Visual artists often rent studios when they decide to really invest in their art; paying for a course can be a way to invest in your future as a writer.  I took a number of writing and playwriting courses at college, and what I learned wasn’t always apparent right then.  But now I’m glad for every one of them –– almost every time I sit down to write, I remember something I learned in one of my courses.
